Temporary Berths Guide
THE TEMPORARY BERTHS GUIDE
** NEW FOR 2026 **
Even if you have used the temporary berths system in 2025, be aware of the following NEW FEATURES and NEW FEES for 2026. Full details are found in the later sections of this guide.
- The calendar now automatically removes segments of berth availability periods (blue slots on the calendar) that have been booked whilst retaining any residual available slots of at least 1 night. You no longer have to 'subtract by eye' booked slots (red) from blue availability slots. E.g. if only the middle 2 nights is booked out of a 14 night available berth, the booked weekend will be shown as a red slot and the remaining availability will be shown as two separate 6-night blue slots before and after this weekend (note a 1-hour buffer is automatically applied between bookings and residual availability slots).
- There are now more options to change offers and bookings by email, form and text; full details are in the 'Cancellations, Amendments, Extensions and Curtailment' sections below.
- Other changes to make the system as user-friendly and effective as possible.
- The fee for booking a temporary berth, for non-POG berth-holders, has been increased to £10 per night. Please be aware that payments are periodically cross-checked against bookings made.
Introduction
The Temporary Berths scheme enables Weevil Lake Berth Holders to offer up their berth to other members when they vacate it for a period from 1 night / 2 days to 14 nights / 15 days, between 1st April and 31st October. For a short daytime stay, book an Amenity Berth instead and from 15 nights / 16 days, the Short Term Sublet process applies. Temporary berths at Weevil Lake can be very useful to members, so all Weevil mooring holders (Permanent, ASL and STSL) are encouraged to always make their berth available when not in use. Even just a single overnight period could help someone expedite a quick maintenance task that requires workshop access for instance.
For all non-POG mooring holders, a fee of £10 per night applies for the use of a Temporary Berth. This fee does not apply to POG mooring holders (including Burrow Island, Haslar and Wicor). The contribution is made by purchasing one or more 'Temporary Berth Fee' items in the 'Temporary Berthing' section of the online Shop. These fees are returned to POG funds, not the permanent mooring holder. You may pay for a temporary berth after it has completed to avoid the complication of applying for a refund due to the berth holder returning early. Please be aware that payments are periodically cross-checked against bookings made.
Members using a Temporary Berth will require their own Smart Card with a credit balance to access electrical power.
Be aware that the Temporary Berths system works through a database that is external to the main website database. The moorings team will endeavour to keep this external database synchronised with the main database in terms of new members, changes to contact details, replacement boats and new part-year sublets. However at times there may be a lag of up to around 2 weeks.
Offering a Temporary Berth
There are two ways to make your berth available as a Temporary Berth;
- In advance of departure, though the 'Offer or Request a Berth' form on the Temporary Berths page. You will receive a response by email, which will confirm whether you have successfully made your berth available, or if not, the reason why.
- At the time of departure, by sending a Text (SMS) message to 07520 615378 indicating your planned return date and time in the all-number numerical format ddmmhhmm (e.g. 24071600), or, alternatively with three-letter month (e.g. 24jul1600). You will receive a response by text. This method will only work if you use the FIRST mobile phone number that is registered to you on your profile page.
Finding and Requesting a Temporary Berth
Available and already-booked Temporary Berths are shown on the Temporary Berth Calendar (blue availability slots and red booked slots) on the Temporary Berths page. Be aware that you will find a better selection of berths available if you check prior to your departure than if you try and book days in advance, as most members do not declare their berth available until they are ready to leave. To see all the information related to a blue availability slot, please click on the slot as some important information (such a berth size or end time) will not always be visible in the calendar monthly view. Available berths show their length and width (in m), which you can compare with your boat's LOA and beam to know if a particular berth is large enough. (Note that the dimensions shown are the berth dimensions, not the dimensions of the permanent boat).
Temporary berths can be requested through the 'Offer or Request a Berth' form below the Temporary Berths Calendar. You will receive a response by email which will confirm whether you have successfully secured a temporary berth booking, or if not, the reason why. If you have secured a berth the email will contain contact details of the berth holder, and the berth holder will also be sent your contact details.
Tips for Success
Please take care completing the form and double-check the information entered before submitting.
- Your POG number should be 2, 3 or 4 digits (without leading zeros) and your postcode should be capital letters, numbers and one space (e.g. PO12 1AZ), exactly how it appears in your profile page.
- The end date must be at least 1 day after the start date, but no more than 14 nights, and the entire period must be within 1st April to 31st October.
- If requesting a berth, ensure your request is within the availability slot of a berth on the calendar, in terms of both dates AND times (to see the end time, click on the available berth in the calendar).
- Also ensure your boat will fit within the berth's dimensions (note that where more than one berth is available, you will be allocated the smallest berth that is large enough for your boat).
- It is NOT possible for a single booking to span multiple availability slots.
- The system allows multiple bookings in one long availability slot for a given berth. Its does this by automatically creating residual availability slots (minimum 1 night) after any booking is made. A 1-hour buffer is automatically applied between bookings and residual availability slots. Note that two time-separated bookings made by the same boat in the same original availability slot counts as two separate bookings (see Terms and Conditions).
Cancellations, Amendments, Extensions and Curtailments
For 2026, we have introduced a wider range of options for members to Cancel/Amend an offer/booking in advance of its start, or Extend/Curtail an offer/booking after it has started, as detailed below.
OFFERS
To CANCEL an OFFER IN ADVANCE OF ITS START: either follow the instructions on the received email, or resubmit the form with the same start/end date/time as the offer (using the the most recent dates/times if the original offer was amended).
To AMEND an OFFER IN ADVANCE OF ITS START: resubmit the form with the same start date/time but the revised end date/time (if changing the end) , or with the revised start date/time but the same end date/time (if changing the start). (You cannot change both the start and the end on the same submission. Also, you cannot combine two separated offers this way; cancel one and then amend the other).
To EXTEND or CURTAIL an OFFER THAT HAS STARTED: use the form method as above to change the end date/time only, OR, simply text the new end date/time to the Temporary Berths text number. To curtail an offer with near-immediate effect, use a time that is around 15 mins ahead of the current time to ensure the system has time to respond.
Note: if any Offer Cancellation, Amendment or Curtailment impacts a Booking, the Booker will be informed by email. If the impact is within the next 48 hrs, please contact with the Booker directly; in this case it is not essential to submit an email/form/text to the Temporary Berth system (although this is preferred to maintain accurate records) . This does not change the rule of giving the Booker a minimum of 2hrs notice (see Terms and Conditions below).
BOOKINGS
To CANCEL a BOOKING IN ADVANCE OF ITS START: either follow the instructions on the received email, or resubmit the form with the same start/end date/time as the booking (using the the most recent dates/times if the original booking was amended).
To AMEND a BOOKING IN ADVANCE OF ITS START: resubmit the form with the same start date/time but the revised end date/time (if changing the end) , or with the revised start date/time but the same end date/time (if changing the start). (You cannot change both the start and the end on the same submission. Also, you cannot combine two separated bookings in the same availability slot this way; cancel one and then amend the other).
To EXTEND or CURTAIL a BOOKING THAT HAS STARTED: use the form method as above to change the end date/time only. To curtail a booking with near-immediate effect, use a time that is around 15 mins ahead of the current time to ensure the system has time to respond.
MAKE SURE YOUR BOOKING ON THE CALENDAR MATCHES THE ACTUAL NIGHTS ON THE BERTH. For example if the booking is curtailed early, submit a new form on your return. This ensures accurate record keeping and accounting.
DO NOT MAKE SPECULATIVE BOOKINGS AND THEN CANCEL OR CURTAIL THEM WITHOUT GOOD REASON. This makes it difficult for other to use the available berth. The frequency and notice of Temporary Beth booking cancellations/curtailments will be monitored and the facilities will be disabled if it is abused by members.
If you are unable to cancel, amend or extend/curtail an offer or booking to your satisfaction, please contact Moorings.
Terms and Conditions of Temporary Berths
There are a number of terms and conditions associated with Temporary Berths, as laid out in Standing Orders (sections A8.2 and A8.3). Two critical ones are;
MEMBERS USING A TEMPORARY BERTH MUST BE IN A POSITION TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE AT 2 HOURS NOTICE. IF THE PERMANENT BERTH HOLDER CONTACTS YOU AND ASKS YOU TO VACATE WITH THIS NOTICE, YOU MUST DO SO
- There is a cap on the total number of nights a member may book Temporary Berths over the course of a season of 30 nights.
- You are not permitted to have more than 2 active temporary berth or amenity berth bookings.
